So… What Does a
Parks and Recreation Department Do?
Often times, when I tell people what my career is, the question that follows is “So what do you do?” In the past, my answer has been ‘I create and maintain a budget, we keep our parks mowed, offer a variety of programs to the community…’ While those are all tasks we accomplish, it doesn’t quite explain the impact our department has on this community. After attending a conference recently, I now have one solid answer to that question.
The answer is: We CREATE COMMUNITY THROUGH PEOPLE, PARKS AND PROGRAMS. Believe it or not, our department has the ability to impact a person’s health and wellness, decrease juvenile crime, improve property values, increase cultural unity and quite simply, provide someone with a wonderful recreation experience. And those are just a few aspects!
It is my pledge to you that in 2008, our department will continue our role in ‘Creating Community’ by focusing our efforts to:
- Strengthen Community Image and Sense of Place
- Support Economic Development
- Strengthen Safety and Security
- Promote Health and Wellness
- Facilitate Community Problem Solving
- Foster Human Development
- Protect Environmental Resources
- Provide Cost Savings/Revenue Enhancement
- Provide Recreational Experiences
So how do we do all of these things? I encourage you to take a look inside our brochure and see. It starts with the hard work and wonderful support of our ‘team’. Through our parks, events, working with community groups and accomplishing many other ‘tasks’, our department ‘Creates Community Through People, Parks and Programs’.
If you would like to learn more about our mission, please visit the rest of our website, or email me at recdirector@ogdenny.com. We look forward to seeing you through our parks and programs this year!

Peter O’Brien
