Selection of Materials

In conjunction with the stated General Library Policy, materials are chosen for values of interest, information and enlightenment of all the people of the community. This includes children, young adults, and adults.

In no case are library materials excluded because of the race, nationality or the social, political or religious views of the author.

The library strives to maintain a well rounded collection within the confines of budget and space.

The techniques and selection aids used are in accordance with the Monroe County Library System contract and with the publishers' catalogs and other professional selection tools available.

Responsibility for selection:

The overall selection policy is the responsibility of the Director, who assigns staff members to buy materials for the library. Those staff members and their areas of responsibility are:
  • Anne Strang - Children's Books, Recorded Books, DVDs and Music
  • Roberta Voelkl - Young Adult Books
  • Kate Vreeland - Adult Books, Recorded Books, Local History & Genealogy, and DVDs
  • Cindy Lott - Adult Music
  • Kay Hughes-Dennett - General Selection for all ages
Selection criteria:

Subjects, titles and authors that have been demonstrated to be popular in the Town of Ogden will be chosen.

Materials that will serve a purpose in the collection will be selected for their factual, accurate, effective style, the suitability and significance of the subject matter and their reliability and sincerity of opinion.

Taken into account will be durability and cost.

Controversial materials:

Most issues have two (2) sides and in keeping with the selection policies, controversial materials may be added to the collection.

If there is a criticism of material in the library, the critic is asked to put in writing his/her name, address, etc, the title, author of material, the reasons for objection and the objectionable parts.

If, after reviewing the complaint, the Board of Trustees and the Library Director deem the material to have been selected according to the aforementioned Selection Policies, the material will stay in the collection.
