Internet Access at the Ogden Farmers' Library

Internet access, as provided by the Monroe County Library System, allows the Ogden Farmers' Library to provide electronic information beyond the physical confines of our collection, including access to ideas, information and commentary from around the globe.

The Internet is an unmediated, global medium which offers access to a wealth of excellent material, but also provides access to materials and images which some people might find offensive or disturbing. The Children's Internet Protection Act requires all public and school libraries in the United States to use a filter to protect children from pornography and other harmful material available on the Internet. In compliance with this law, the Ogden Farmers' Library Board of Trustees has elected to use a product called the R2000 to filter pornography and chat access on library computers. Comments or concerns regarding this decision should be addressed in writing to the Ogden Farmers' Library Board of Trustees, 269 Ogden Center Road, Spencerport, NY 14559.

The library cannot control materials and images available on the Internet. Therefore users must be aware that the Ogden Farmers' Library and its agents cannot be held responsible for what may be accessed through the library computers.

The library upholds and affirms the right of each individual, regardless of age, to access constitutionally protected material. However, due to the public atmosphere of the library, we also ask users to follow a code of conduct while accessing the Internet. That code of conduct is available for viewing below.

The library also affirms the right and responsibility of parents to monitor their children's use of the library materials and resources, including the Internet.

Courtesy & Common Sense: Internet Code of Conduct

The Ogden Farmers' Library asks that you observe the following code of conduct while using the Internet. Anyone found in violation of this code will lose their Internet access privileges at this library. This Code of Conduct is based on the library's Internet Access Policy and is in compliance with the Children's Internet Protection Act. Comments or concerns should be directed to Anne Strang, Interim Library Director, at 585-617-6181 or by email to library@ogdenny.com.

  • Any illegal use of the Internet is strictly prohibited. Illegal uses include but may not be limited to the viewing of child pornography, infringement of copyright, credit card fraud, and the sending of libelous and/or harassing email.
  • You are in a public place and therefore must respect the rights of others by not displaying on the monitor sexually explicit material and images that are likely to prove objectionable to those around you. Library staff reserve the right to remove such images from the monitor and ask you to leave.
  • Use of chat rooms and instant messenging programs is prohibited in the library for a variety of reasons. Chat and IM sites often allow "spyware" programs to download and run in the background on the computer. Spyware compromises the privacy of patrons using the computers and often creates conflicts with other software.
  • Attempts to add to, remove, or in anyway alter the hardware and software configurations on the computer or the library network will not be tolerated.
  • If all computers are in use, please limit your time online to allow others access to a computer. If you have been online for a long time and people are waiting to use a computer, you may be asked to vacate the computer to let another person use it.
  • Users must pay for pages printed. Printing costs are 20¢ per page for all copies. Copies print behind the desk, so pick them up and pay for them there.
