The Ogden Farmers' Library is an Association Library, which means that it is a privately held organization governed by an appointed Board of Trustees representing the people of Ogden. If the library were to close or otherwise dissolve, all assets belonging to the library would become the property of the town residents. As an Association Library, OFL also holds 501 (c) 3 status as a tax exempt charity. That means any donation made to the library is fully tax deductible.
Making a donation to the Library can be done in many ways.
- Materials - We accept thousands of donations of materials each year, some of which are kept for the library collection while others go into our book sale or are offered to other libraries or educational institutions. Your donations save the library hundreds of dollars each year by allowing us to replace worn library books with new copies, and to add items to the collection that we otherwise would not purchase.
This practice has been especially important for our Local History and Genealogy collections, which have benefitted from large donations of rare materials from area genealogists. Since 1999, the library has received donations of three significant genealogy collections from private citizens that included rare maps, books, and pamphlets vital to people researching the history of Monroe COunty and the Towns of Ogden and Parma.
- Cash - Many people choose to make cash donations each year.
Those donations come by mail, in person, or online through our "Donate Now" link on this page. Cash donations can be directed for specific purposes such as books, furniture, genealogy materials, or equipment.
People often designate the library as the recipient of donations made in memory of a loved one who has passed on. Recent donations in memory of local residents Robert Hewitt, Bob & Carolyn Sickelco and Mary Epping have resulted in the purchase of hundreds of book, equipment, and furniture for the children's and adult reading areas, as well as in the lovely mural in the children's area and in several trees planted in our memorial garden.
- Memorial Books - Donations of cash or special books can be made in honor of someone special in your life. These books have special memorial plates inserted in the front that identify the person being honored or the occasion being remembered. Many families donate a children's book in honor of a birth, while others donate to commemorate a graduation or marriage.
- Time - Donations of your time are also highly valued by the Library. We have many people who regularly volunteer their time by reading shelves and making sure all our books are in order, by shelving, by working at book sales, by weeding our memorial garden, by visiting politicians and talking about the importance of the library in our community, or in many other ways.
- Bequests - People who have made the library an important part of their lives often name OFL in their wills. When this happens, the Library Director works with the surviving family to identify the best way to use that money.
