The Special Police assist the Police Dept. in keeping up to date records of local businesses by periodically reviewing and verifying information such as the name of the current owner and emergency phone numbers. Other duties include but are not limited to numerous details for town and village events, traffic Control, Crowd control, Bike patrol and assisting court Security if needed.

The Special Police actively participate in the community Policing Program. We encourage our officers to do routine foot patrol throughout the village. This increases visibility with local businesses and encourages one on one contact with residents. It also allows for the opportunity to contact the youth of the town in an informal atmosphere, so that they feel free to talk to the officers.

To maintain officer safety, OSPD continually offers ongoing training by way of in-service schools and videos. All officers are encouraged to discuss safety, training and other concerns with the Command Staff allowing OSPD to continually provide better services to the community.

The basic qualifications are:

· At least 21 years of age

· Permanent resident of Monroe County, New York State and a U.S. citizen

· Posses a valid NYS driver’s license

· High school graduate or G.E.D

· Good moral character without a felony conviction
        (A misdemeanor conviction may  also prevent acceptance)

· Good physical and mental health condition with no medical restrictions that would hinder performing the duties of a Special Police Officer.

· Consent to a background investigation
